Xiaomi recently announced the budget model Redmi 10, which, at $179 for the base version, is the cheapest smartphone in the world with a 50-megapixel main camera. Thanks to the new 50-megapixel sensors, the Chinese company intends to take cameras to a whole new level in budget solutions.
A few years ago, Xiaomi began to actively pay attention to the cameras of flagship smartphones, after which they switched to more affordable models. For example, Redmi Note 8 Pro became the world’s first phone with a 64-megapixel module, while Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro debuted a 108-megapixel image sensor. According to Chinese network informant Digital Chat Station, the company intends to abandon Sony’s 64-megapixel sensors in favor of new 50-megapixel matrices.
The Redmi 10 uses a 1/1.26-inch Samsung ISOCELL JN1 image sensor with 0.64 micron pixels. In future low-cost smartphones, the company intends to use a 1/1.5-inch optical Sony IMX766 sensor with 1 micron pixels. Such a sensor is installed in a number of smartphones of different price segments. For example, OnePlus 9 Pro for 999 euros and OnePlus Nord 2 for 399 euros.
The mass transition of Xiaomi models to 50-megapixel image sensors is planned for 2022. Which smartphones will be able to boast an updated camera has not yet been specified.
